Fiction Services

What I Offer

    • You have an outline or a basic idea that you need some support fleshing out

    • You have a partial draft that’s going in several (sometimes contradictory!) directions and you’re not sure which threads to follow

    • You’re excited about your idea/outline/partial draft but don’t know what the next steps are

For this service, I’ll work with you on a call or via email to flesh out your idea, outline, or partial draft, guiding you to follow the threads that spark with the most aliveness. You’ll leave with a 3-5 page evaluation of your draft (if you have one), more confidence in your work, and next steps to move forward.

Coaching can be especially helpful for newer writers and those who prefer to talk things over. More experienced writers as well as those with more complete drafts may prefer the evaluation component on its own.

    $72 USD/hour, and/or starting from $200 for draft feedback

    • You want to write but you’re having trouble making the time for it

    • You can’t seem to meet the deadlines you set

    • You value process, curiosity, and play, but struggle with incorporating it into your work

Running into issues protecting your writing time and committing to your creative practice? I offer coaching for just these kinds of situations!

We will go through a framework to explore what’s getting in your way and ideate on potential solutions; we may also do writing exercises and body doubling to support your practice.

    $72 USD/hour

    • You have a complete manuscript draft, and you’re looking for some external support before it goes into the developmental editing stage

    • You’re looking for reader feedback from someone who can ask generative questions that will guide you towards clarity and effective revision

With this service, I provide big-picture feedback on your draft focusing on both strengths and recommended areas for improvement from the perspective of an engaged reader.

    Starting at $150

    • You have a completed draft that you’ve revised to the best of your ability and you need an outside editorial perspective to recommend the most effective options for further revision

    • You don’t want your limited budget to get in the way of potentially going through multiple rounds of revision

With this more affordable entry point service, I provide big-picture feedback on your draft in a letter (typically around 5-8 pages) focusing on both strengths and recommended areas for improvement, along with a follow-up call of up to 30 minutes or an email exchange to discuss any questions you may have, to set you up for successful revision. Once you’ve revised, you have the option to purchase a Developmental Edit for a second, deeper round of revision.

$50-$65 USD per 5,000 words, a more exact price quote will be provided upon my review of the manuscript

Example project: a completed romance manuscript of 80,000 words would start at $800

    • You have a bigger budget and would appreciate detailed in-line comments throughout your manuscript drawing attention to where specific issues are popping up

    • You have already gotten a manuscript evaluation and are looking to go even deeper

This service combines granular feedback in the form of in-line manuscript comments with big-picture feedback on your draft through a letter (typically around 8-10 pages), along with a follow-up call or email to discuss your questions and revision process.

This service will focus on foundational issues such as plot and story structure, character development, and setting, and will not cover more surface-level problems with sentence structure, grammar, spelling, or punctuation (you’ll need a copyeditor for that).

$120-$145 USD per 5,000 words, a more exact price quote will be provided upon my review of the manuscript

Example project: a completed romance manuscript of 80,000 words would start at $1,920

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Reach out through my contact form.

  • I work more broadly with writers who want to ground their manuscripts in an embodied approach, including but not limited to romance (particularly erotic romance, kinky romance, some dark romance, and manuscripts with a higher level of “spice”), horror (including body horror and erotic horror), science fiction and fantasy, and literary fiction. I’m also open to more experimental literature.

I’m generally not a good fit for mysteries, thrillers, or suspense manuscripts (though I do work with those elements in manuscripts with a more literary focus), and am happy to refer you to other qualified editors for those genres.

  • My fiction rates are more set than my nonfiction and academic rates so that I have the flexibility to work with graduate students and contingent faculty on their projects. That said, depending on your budget, there may still be ways we can work together through a one-off coaching session, beta reading, or manuscript evaluation. Feel free to reach out and we can discuss.

  • While many of the platforms I use have some AI components to them (including Notion, Google Docs, and Gmail), I don’t use generative AI personally or professionally, and prefer to work with non-AI generated manuscripts. If this is a concern, feel free to reach out and we can discuss.

  • Yes! My primary clientele is other queer and trans people, but I love to work with writers and scholarly allies who appreciate a queer and trans editorial perspective.

Kind Words

“Elliott has helped me so much in developing my writing, specifically when it comes to character motivations and digging into their psychology to help you figure out why a character wants what they want. He’s also so supportive and positive while being constructive, always asking interesting and provocative questions. Hire this guy!”
